Just before April 12, the second anniversary of the death of Ladislav Mateić, a record collector and fan of free jazz and contemporary improvised music in general, a separate Ladislav Mateić Collection, composed of the mentioned records that Ladislav’s widow, Nevenka, donated to the KGZ, will be opened in the music department of the City Library (KGZ). Nevenka Mateić chose the music department because it guarantees the maximum availability of records to the general public, while maintaining a proper level of protection. The opening of the Mateić Collection to the public will give it a breath of new life, allowing us to reflect and use the musical material that Mateić presented in his musical meetings over the years and with which he discreetly fashioned the poetics of local contemporary musicians.
At the opening of the Collection, in an intimate atmosphere, a kind of ad hoc duo will perform pieces of free jazz by the soprano-saxophonist Steve Lacy. The duo is composed of saxophonist Saša Nestorović and drummer Andrea Centazzo, both highly versed in Lacy’s opus. Lacy is therefore the leitmotif behind the whole event: Mateić had a lot of his records in the collection, Centazzo performed with his mentor Lacy, and some of the recordings dedicated to Lacy have been released by Ictus, Centazzo’s longstanding record label, which will also be presented at this event.
