Botanical Walk: Flora of the Medvednica Foothill

Eager to connect on a deeper level with the diverse performance spaces while keeping the ecological subtext in mind, as dictated by its Proclamation, this year's festival organized three botanical walks with biologist Luna Džidić. Luna Džidić is also an artist, who makes jewelry and unique ceramic pieces from natural clay and plant materials. The walks with her will focus on observing the vegetation in the performing spaces, and the imprints that make up their entire environment—undeniably affected by day-to-day human influence.

As they stroll through the city center, around the foot of the Medvednica hill and the plateau along the Sava embankment beneath the Jadranski Bridge, visitors will find out about the kinds of plans that inhabit these areas and whether they are medicinal, edible or otherwise useful to humans. There will also be a discussion as to how much human influence limits or even stimulates their diversity, i.e. abundance, and the environmental conditions that, in a broader sense, must be met so that the vegetation that we find in these selected areas can develop. For instance, in the botanical walk across the Upper Town, the walls that are, according to the author, a collection of anthropogenic habitats of the wild urban flora will be studied, and, depending on the group’s interest, the method of identifying species in the area with a botanical key, shown.
