Laura Muller / Klangforum Wien

The Klangforum Wien is the resident ensemble at this year’s Music Biennale Zagreb. This contemporary music ensemble was founded in 1985 by Austrian composer and conductor Beat Furrer. It has presented nearly 600 first performances of works by internationally renowned composers and has released more than 90 albums, and performed in some of the best-known concert and opera halls and took part in the programs of the major festivals in Europe, America and Asia.

It will have a major role in the MBZ’s program as its resident ensemble, so, in addition to this concert, it will also participate in a workshop for young performers of new music (the concert of the ASMANGU ensemble) as a mentor ensemble and hold another solo concert at the Zagreb Youth Theater, prior to which a discussion with its artistic director and guest composers will take place. Over the course of a few days, the Močvara Club will also host musical portraits, that is, discussions with members of the ensemble as well as their brief solo performance.

For this performance, the ensemble will be accompanied by French mezzo soprano Laura Muller. Muller graduated in French literature from Sorbonne University, and her singing repertoire includes early music, Lied and oratorios. Since she is also interested in contemporary music, she is part of the vocal ensemble Les Métaboles, which specialized in the 21st century music, as well as the Sequenza 9.3 ensemble.

The repertoire includes compositions by some of the greatest living composers of new music, including a new piece by French composer Franck Bedrossian, which will have its concert premiere on this occasion. Coming from a strong harmony focussed tradition, Franck Bedrossian’s works show a variety of principles which pursue the development of sound based thinking. With the creation of multiple sonic layers, which consist of music materials varying from noise to pure melodies, ambiguities of the inner sonic world are formed. Complex polyphonic structures produce textures that are in constant interaction with an overall idea of the timbre-melody, shaping a dramaturgy throughout articulation of excess.
