Musical Portrait: Annette Bik

members of the Klangforum Wien ensemble

The idea of a resident ensemble at a festival or any large, prolonged musical event, generally creates the impression of an untouchable, highly cultured and elite phenomenon in which the public can only establish one-sided communication as passive recipients of content. The MBZ, as set out in its Proclamation, aims to move away from such models of operation and enable mutual communication between the artist and the audience. For four days, from April 17 to 20, the artistic director of the MBZ, Margareta Ferek Petrić, and a few members of the Klangforum Wien, the internationally renowned ensemble for new music, with about 90 albums and more than 600 premieres, will gather at the Močvara Club, a non-profit organization of citizens and a popular alternative culture site, and the LAUBA, the house for people and art. In addition to not being in their usual places of performance and presentation, participants will not be in their biggest roles at the MBZ either. Margareta Ferek Petrić will now be primarily the interviewer and the discussion motivator, and the musicians will be taken out of the context of their ensemble, the collective, to become versatile individuals that we would otherwise hardly get to experience, let alone meet, in a traditional festival setting. At the conclusion of the discussion, all (co)speakers will also give a brief solo performance on their instrument.

Violinist Annette Bik, percussionist Lukas Schiske, violist Dimitrios Polisoidis, cellist Benedikt Leitner and clarinetist Bernhard Zachhuber will be in attendance. The program will include pieces by Giacinto Scelsi, Slobodan Kajkut, Simon Steen-Andersen and Toshio Hosokawa.
