NAE Collective x SNOP

After a performance at the KotorArt International Festival and the Festival of New Sound Sinj, Nature Amplified, a co-production between three festivals, is coming to MBZ 33. Nature Amplified explores the alienation of modern humans from nature, examining disconnection and speculating about our future relationship. Inspired by natural processes and environmental concerns, it fuses performance arts, acousmatics and video art with science and ecology. In terms of aesthetic practices, the project explores the liminal fields between the natural and the artificial.

 

Using sonification techniques, the bioacoustic and ecological data are transposed into sonic formats. Synthetic sounds, inspired by natural processes, merge with field recordings, creating a counterpoint for the interpretation of natural phenomena. It thus depicts “nature in boxes” – closed and isolated, as a reflection of our mode of perceiving and “consuming” nature. In this synthetic representation, nature is amplified, attempting to evoke an organic presence within the algorithm. The sounds act as a reminder of the vitality of nature, despite its abstraction and distortion in human perception. The composition explores the tension between the artificial and the organic, portraying our fractured relationship with nature and its life-giving power.

 

Nature Amplified develops as an exploration of natural phenomena through various experiments: one of them is Maurice – a newly built instrument that combines elements of a guitar, lyre and Chinese guzheng, created by multimedia artists Tin Dožić and Maxime Weinmann. The repertoire of Nature Amplified thus opens with Conversation with the Wind, followed by Memories of Kowloon, and lastly, the composition of American-German composer Simon Kanzler for prepared cello and percussion: ⁠The Fabrication of Nature. This piece explores the digital recreation of memories of natural landscapes, decoding them into their elementary visual and aural components. Nature gradually disintegrates into wireframe structures, textures, and animated elements such as wind and water, until it decomposes into a pixelated reflection of memory. Pursuing the desire to amplify the sound of nature, the ensemble also presents the compositions Conversation with the Earth and Conversation with the Sea, shaped by the music collective, as well as the video works of Goran Nježić.

 

NAE Collective’s performance is completed by Monika Milas’ sculptures and spatial design created by Vanja Magić, who joins SNOP on this occasion. Their collaboration is based on a dialogue between sculptural elements and architectural solutions, allowing them to jointly explore the interaction between art and space. Monika’s sculptures add dimension and texture, while Vanja’s spatial solutions contextualize and bring these sculptures to life, exploring the coexistence of space, sculpture and sound. In addition to visual interventions, SNOP also brings a hybrid DJ/VJ set created by Kristian Bagarić and Josip Kornet evoking a subjective experience of the winter solstice by amalgamating melancholic scenes of Zagreb with the sounds of contemporary classical and experimental ambient music.
