Harpsichord up(to)date
The lecture on contemporary music for harpsichord and the methods of composing for this instrument will contribute to a better understanding of contemporary harpsichord literature and harpsichord in general as an instrument rarely found in works by living composers. The lecture will focus on outlining the different styles throughout history and explain how and why a particular style influenced the composing for harpsichord and the instrument construction. It will also address the most significant developments and extended composing techniques in the 20th and 21st century harpsichord music. The key point is to raise awareness that the harpsichord is very different from the piano, which also means that the method of composing for this instrument is different. Composers will get answers to important questions such as what the range of the harpsichord is, whether it can be played with dynamics, what the particularities of the registers are etc. The lecture/workshop is mainly designed for composers and composition students but is open to all interested parties. The number of attendees is limited by the space where the lecture will be held.
