MBZ Late Night: re/fraction

scapegoat & Sara Salamon

“at times an illusion, at times a performance”

Australian duo scapegoat and local visual artist Sara Salamon meet for the first time to prepare the immersive performance re/fraction – an interplay of image and sound in which perception turns fluid. Guided by synesthetic associations, Sara connects tone with movement, transforming the sounds into colours and texture. She challenges the senses with perceptual traps, creating effects that the eye recognises, even when they are not necessarily there. As certain contrasts are brought together, they produce different perceptual shifts.

The three pieces performed by the duo do not adhere to the visuals verbatim, rather remaining in constant dialogue with the space – and it is up to the audience to discover their inter-relationships. Surrounded by speakers, enveloped in sound and light, the spectators choose their own perspective: whether to sit or lie down, trace the minutest details of the performance or indulge in their own thoughts – however they feel comfortable.

Sara Salamon in her work often eschews the medium, finding inspiration in collective wilderness and elusive reality. She is active in the fields of different artistic practices as a visual artist, videographer and editor. She was awarded for collaborative artwork at the 55th Zagreb Salon alongside Sven Sorić, Tin Dožić and Hrvoje Spudić for creating our visual identity.

Experimental duo scapegoat consists of Australian saxophonist Joshua Hyde and Canadian percussionist Noam Bierstone. Their programs challenge audience expectations and open up a space for new experiences. They perform original works featuring electronics, sonic and visual amplification, video, lighting design, and improvisation.
