Mauro Lanza

Mauro Lanza

Mauro Lanza, born 1975 in Venice, studied piano and composition at the conservatory of his home town. He completed his studies when he attended the annual course of composition and computer music from 1998 to 1999 at IRCAM in Paris. He was a fellow of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Academy of France in Rome and the Akademie Schloss Solitude. He taught composition at McGill University in Montreal, at the Conservatory of Cuneo, at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona and at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. At IRCAM, he regularly worked as a composer in research and was the composition advisor for their annual composition course from 2010 to 2013.

His compositions, tinged with irony, represent a fusion of classical instruments and unconventional sound sources, such as physical modeling synthesis, toy instruments, noisemakers, various specimens of „objets trouvés“ and custom-made machineries. His works include collaborations on Regnum Animale and Regnum Vegetabile with Andrea Valle. Lanza has also ventured into interdisciplinary projects, composing music for dance and video opera. His works are published by Ricordi/Milan, and in 2014 he received the Franco Abbiati Prize for best creation.
