Classical:Next – Croatian Composers' Society and Music Biennale Zagreb at the music fair

Classical: Next is a unique musical intersection, a global network, and a platform for the exchange of ideas, products, and projects dedicated exclusively to classical music. This May, after a three-year COVID break, Classical: Next found its host in one of UNESCO's Cities of Music - Hanover. The four days of the intensive program, from 17th to 20th May, therefore brought together over 1000 professionals from around 45 countries at this tenth jubilee edition.

Margareta Ferek Petrić, composer and artistic director of the 32nd Zagreb Music Biennale, and musicologist Nina Čalopek, executive producer and member of the festival's program team, travelled to Hanover as representatives of the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS) and the Music Biennale Zagreb. To the gathered composers, performers, managers, music producers, curators and educators, publishers, and others in the cultural and creative music business, HDS representatives laid out the interests of HDS members through various projects already realized within the Music Biennale Zagreb and through planned projects in collaboration with potential international partners. In addition to lobbying and making numerous contacts, our two representatives attended many featured programs, from lectures on various specialized topics, mentoring programs, and closed discussions to concert presentations of selected performers of the classical music sector.

The appearance of the Croatian Composers' Society with its largest and oldest project (along with the Zagreb Festival) at a conference of such importance as Classical: Next, is only the beginning of the efforts needed to build the international position and relevance of Croatian composers.
