Second prize of the city of Stuttgart for the opera "XinSheng" by Davor Branimir Vincze

Croatian composer with an impressive international career, Davor Branimir Vincze, won second prize at the 67th Composition Competition of the City of Stuttgart. Thanks to the opera for singers, chamber ensemble and electronics "XinSheng", the composer received an award worth 4,000 euros. As the jury of the competition pointed out, high quality of work was required to achieve victory, which Vincze accomplished.
The competition was not an easy one, as 87 composers competed with as many as 153 works. The winning pieces will be performed at the Eclat Festival Neue Musik Stuttgart award ceremony in February next year. The members of the jury were Martina Seeber, a representative of Südwestrundfunk, prof. Martin Schüttler, representative of the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, Annesley Black, composer, prof. Markus Hechtle, composer, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, composer, Monika Pasiecznik, musicologist, and Boglárka Pecze, clarinetist, Ensemble Trio Catch. The award ceremony was chaired by Marc Gegenfurtner, Head of the Stuttgart City Office of Culture.
Vinze's work "XinSheng" was performed by the Decoder ensemble at the Music Biennale Zagreb on July 16 2021 at the Jedinstvo Plant. It is this very opera that is the dissertation work of the composer at Stanford University.
"The title of my opera for singers, chamber ensemble and electronics is "XinSheng". It is the story of a couple running a company, which has an illegal and, say, legal face. First, as boxing managers, the couple lures potential young boxers to sign contracts with their company with the promise of coaching them for the Olympics. However, their real plan is hidden: to exhaust the boxers with each subsequent tournament, take their organs and sell them on the black market. Second, their company produces the refreshing drink "XinSheng". In larger quantities, "XinSheng" boosts the endurance of athletes and regenerates them, but prolonged use leads to failure of internal organs. That dark side of seemingly legal business is another way this couple is creating demand for their organ trade”, the composer said of his work last year.
