MBZ ARTIST TALK WITH JULIE HERNDON AND DAVOR BRANIMIR VINCZE

On our YouTube Channel, you can watch our new MBZ Artist Talk: The artistic director of the Music Biennale Zagreb, Margareta Ferek-Petrić, talks to composers Julie Herndon and Davor Branimir Vincze, whose recently recorded operas will be presented at the 31st MBZ.

The project is the result of a collaboration between the Decoder Ensemble from Hamburg and the Stanford University Department of Music. It features three one-act operas – thesis compositions by the students in the PhD program at Stanford University – initially meant to be presented live, both at Stanford and the Music Biennale Zagreb. Due to COVID-19, an in-person residency presented logistical challenges, so the project pivoted to virtual operas, which were produced this March in Berlin with Heinrich Horwitz as creative director.

The project is also supported by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Hamburg.

The recorded works are Xinsheng, by Davor Branimir Vincze, At That Time, by Julie Herndon, and Symptom of Expression, by Chris Lortie, and you can watch them on MBZ's YouTube channel as well.
