Ivan Josip Skender on Fund
I was awarded the scholarship of the Rudolf and Margita Matz Fund due to my work on the opera Stribor's forest. As I have spent the greater part of the academic year 2010/2011 between Vienna, Zagreb and Rijeka, it was crucial to have the adequate tools for composing the opera “on the road”. So the first investment I made was to buy a portable computer with notation and audio material processing software. I also used a part of the scholarship to upgrade my PC to a kind of studio hardware simulation.
Because of my post graduate study of orchestral conducting in Vienna, I took an unpaid leave of absence from my job at the National theatre in Zagreb, which left me without an income. The scholarship also helped make the score and other parts for the performance of Stribor’s forest in Rijeka, for the Music Biennale Zagreb 2011.
Apart from the mentioned opera, I have also composed a couple of chamber works in 2011 (Cappricio for clarinet and piano, Closing time for quartet Klang – percussion and pianos) and a piece for mixed choir (Toy of the winds on lyrics by Tin Ujević). I have started working on a large scale vocal-instrumental oratorio piece in cooperation with Ozren Prohić, for which at this point research work is being done.
On the whole, 2011 has been the most fulfilled year of my musical career with lots of exclusively good experiences (especially MBZ 2011), and the Fund Matz scholarship turned out to be the help at the right moment which enabled me to finish all my intended projects.
I hope it will continue to serve as a help for the young generations of Croatian composers.
