Đurinović, Maja

Choreographer Maja Đurinović (née Zalar) was born in Zagreb, where she graduated from Grammar School and the School for Rhythmics and Dance, followed by studies of Croatian  language, literature and culture at Filozofski fakultet of Zagreb University. She became a member of Milana Broš's  Free Dance Chamber Ensemble (KASP), performing in R. Moran - Enantiodromia, D. Detoni - Event 13, PlaneFigures and Surfaces, R. Radica - 19 and 10, as well as in Opera -seria, Minimal Moving..). Later she joined the Gesta group (Division of Noon, Search and Waiting, Phenomena). She danced on tour in Croatia and former Yugoslavia, as well as in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Denmark.

From 1979/80 to 1995 she taught dancing at the School for Rythmics and Dance in Zagreb. At the „People's University" of the Dubrava district in Zagreb she started a dance group for children with whom she created programmes shown on Zagreb Television. For several years she collaborated with the Istrian National Theater in Pula as movement coach for its musicals , and with the dance programmes of Mosaico Istriano. Since the 1990s she became interested in stage movement and worked as choreographer of  plays and puppet shows in the theatres of Zagreb, Split, Pula, Virovitica, Zadar, Vinkovci and  Celje).

Since 2007 Maja Đurinović has been teaching in the department of stage movement and puppet theatre at the Osijek Academy of Art, where she is now Assistant Professor, teaching and collaborating as mentor and author on the Academy's projects.

She has published educational texts, reviews, historical surveys, articles dealing with dance theory, and books related to the history of dance in Croatia: Mercedes Goritz Pavelić; Mia Čorak Slavenska; Development of Contemporary Dance: Ana Maletić, A Life. She is the author of the interactive multimedia presentation of Kaspomania by Milana Broš. She is on the editorial board of the magazine dedicated to the art of dancing, Kretanja (Movements).
